Authoritarianism and academic freedom in neoliberal Turkey

This article examines the relationship between academic freedom and authoritarianism in Turkey. While not a new problem Turkish context, has come particularly under attack following attempted military coup on 15 July 2016, as well with intervention Syrian conflict. paper is focused scholars academics currently working universities. The explores questions: (1) how do these define Turkey; (2) what universities society; (3) are changes that higher education facing 2016 d’etat, particular, terms of pressures barriers to production; (4) attacks affect scholars’ possibilities create, lecture, resist government’s policies? Drawing Gramsci’s theory intellectuals his notion hegemony, Foucault’s power and/as knowledge, we explore authority knowledge. We argue aggressive politics against result failure consolidate its hegemony through establish an intellectual base Gramscian fashion.
